Paul began his career as a trainee at Sheffield Wednesday. At the end of which, he joined Welling United, for a year, before becoming a valued member of the Margate squad in 1997. After 4 years at the seaside, Paul moved back up North (he was born in Pontefract), and joined Bradford Park Avenue, and then Ossett Town (for whom he scored many an important goal in their promotion year), before reaching Harrogate at the start if the 2002/03 season. At the end of that season, he joined Worksop Town, and won Players Player of the Year, Supporters Association Player of the Year and Fans Player of the Year, he scored over a dozen goals, only just shy of scooping the Golden Boot award as well. Despite having a prominent season at Worksop, the club overstretched itself getting into Conference North, and Paul was snapped up by Celtic during a clear out. Initially playing as a midfielder, he soon reverted to his more natural role as a central defender and had a phenomenal end to his first season. His second was even better (in which he even made two appearances in Goal, and scooped the Player of the Year awards for both Supporters, and Supporters Association). He passed his two hundredth appearance for Celtic on route to the Play Off final in 2008, the two hundredth coming away at Boston. After a season that saw him come back from a severely broken arm, Syke-o dropped down to FC Halifax to partner Steve Payne and reduce his travelling for the 2009/2010 season.
